Where to Stay in Portland, Oregon: The Best Hotels for a Stylish City Escape
Last Updated on February 25, 2026 by Lauren Belzer Sanford
Even though I grew up just across the river in Southwest Washington, Portland has always been “our” city. PDX was our home airport, and we’d make little seasonal rituals out of visiting downtown — The Nutcracker at Keller Auditorium, holiday high tea (at two different downtown Portland hotels), wandering decorated streets with a cup of something warm. Because home was only a short drive away, I rarely needed a hotel here, but over the years, I’ve “hotel window-shopped,” wandered through lobbies, saved Instagram photos, and created a running list of places I’d book if the opportunity ever presented itself.
If you’re planning a trip to the Pacific Northwest, and specifically, Portland — whether for a cozy winter getaway or a summer escape to somewhere green, a foodie weekend, or a base for exploring the Oregon Coast and Columbia River Gorge — these are the Portland hotels I’d recommend first.
The Duniway Portland, a Hilton Hotel
The Duniway is one of those reliable, comfort-forward hotels that still manages to feel stylish and welcoming — a great fit if you want a modern stay in the heart of downtown without going full luxury. Rooms are sleek and polished, with dark, moody tones, perfect for a “quiet city retreat” vibe after a day of exploring Portland’s food scene.
The hotel’s lobby and restaurant spaces have a boutique-leaning aesthetic, and the location couldn’t be more convenient if you’re planning to shop, restaurant-hop, or catch a show at one of the nearby theaters. It’s the kind of place that works equally well for a weekend getaway or a work trip — elevated, dependable, and well-situated for first-timers wanting to stay central.
Why it belongs on your list: A chic, dependable downtown stay with a boutique feel, walkable to restaurants, theaters, and shopping.
Heathman Hotel
The Heathman Hotel is a Portland classic — elegant, historic, warm — and it holds a special place in my heart. My family and I have had many holiday high teas here over the years, and it’s always been such a cozy, festive tradition. Beyond nostalgia, the hotel itself is beautifully styled: rich woods, soft lighting, literary touches, and that timeless Pacific Northwest charm that people come to love. It also joined a family of stunning hotels, becoming a part of the Aparium Hotel Group in 2023
Rooms lean classic-but-updated, the lobby is one of the loveliest spots downtown to curl up with a coffee, and the service has always felt thoughtful, even just popping in. I imagine that staying here gives you a sense of Portland’s history while still feeling comfortably modern all at once.
Why it belongs on your list: An iconic Portland stay with warm holiday-movie vibes, a literary soul (I love the library-like room), and an unbeatable downtown location.
Hotel Lucia
Hotel Lucia is artsy and full of personality — one of the best boutique options in the city if you love design and character. Its extensive photography collection sets the tone the moment you enter, and the whole hotel feels like a downtown creative hub: stylish but not pretentious, polished but still cozy. The rooms are on the smaller side, but well-decorated, with curated details that make the space feel thoughtful.
It has that quintessential boutique-hotel energy where you actually want to spend time in the communal spaces, whether you’re grabbing a drink, lounging in the lobby, or planning your next stop in the city.
Why it belongs on your list: A design-forward, art-driven boutique stay with warmth, character, and a central location perfect for exploring.
The Hoxton, Portland
If you love a hotel with a strong aesthetic point of view, The Hoxton delivers — industrial-chic meets warm, eclectic styling, with texture, vintage touches, and that signature Hoxton energy that feels effortlessly cool. Rooms are compact but beautifully designed, and the entire property is full of thoughtful spaces to hang out, from the cozy lobby to the rooftop bar with gorgeous views.
The location puts you in a creative pocket of Portland with easy access to the river, museums, and some of the city’s most interesting restaurants and cafés. It feels young and stylish!
Why it belongs on your list: Trendy design, great communal spaces, and an elevated stay!
The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel
The Nines is where Portland does “glam.” It’s located in the historic Meier & Frank building above Pioneer Square, it’s luxurious, dramatic, and perfect if you want a hotel that feels like a treat. The lobby and shared spaces are attention-grabbing — deep teals, velvet textures, bold patterns — and the rooms are upscale while still being comfortable and welcoming. The service, amenities, and on-site dining (Urban Farmer and Departure) add to the experience, making it a great option if you’re celebrating or simply want a more elevated stay.
You’re also as central as it gets, with shopping, restaurants, and many other Portland gateways just steps away.
Why it belongs on your list: Portland luxury with personality — bold interiors, great dining, and a glam-meets-historic setting.
The Ritz-Carlton, Portland
Portland’s newest major luxury opening (2023), The Ritz-Carlton, brings a completely different level of elevation to the city. Think mountain and city views, Pacific Northwest-inspired interiors, beautiful spa and wellness amenities, and the kind of top-knotch service that makes everything feel effortless. It’s grand (in true Ritz-Carlton fashion) but not overdone — elegant, calm, modern, and designed to feel like a sanctuary above the city.
If you want the most luxurious stay currently available in Portland, this is it. It’s new(er), it’s polished, and it’s a city staple for those seeking a little bit of luxury.
Why it belongs on your list: Portland’s top luxury stay (in my opinion) — stunning views, standout service, and a beautiful new spa-driven experience.
The Society Hotel – Portland
The Society Hotel is one of the most unique stays in Portland, blending boutique style with hostel-meets-hotel flexibility. The restored building has historic charm, a simple yet beautiful design, and several room categories — from bunks to private rooms to a full-fledged suite — making it a great option for a range of budgets and travel styles. Its rooftop deck is a highlight, with views over downtown and the river, and the lobby café is cozy and community-driven.
If you love stylish, budget-conscious boutique stays that don’t feel sterile or generic, this is a great pick!
Why it belongs on your list: A charming, budget-friendly boutique stay with historic personality, great design, and a rooftop worth lingering on.
Portland has so many personality-filled hotels, from historic icons to fresh, design-forward boutiques. Whether you want a cozy spot for a winter getaway, a stylish spot for a foodie weekend, or simply a beautiful home base while exploring the PNW, these properties capture the charm and creativity that make Portland such a special place to visit. And if you’ve stayed at any of them (or have one to add to my list!), I’d love to hear.
