The Best Restaurants in Napa Valley: Enjoying Wine Country Beyond the Wine
Last Updated on March 8, 2026 by Lauren Belzer Sanford
With my in-laws living in the valley, Napa has become one of those places we return to again and again — and over the years, we’ve tried a lot of restaurants. Some once, some dozens of times. What’s made it on this list are the ones we keep going back to: the spots that have become our personal landmarks in wine country, the ones I recommend without hesitation when someone says they’re planning a trip.
Napa Valley gets a lot of credit for the wine — and it should. But the food is just as lovely, and the two go hand in hand here in a way that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. Whether you’re planning a long weekend, a romantic anniversary trip, or your first time in wine country, this is where I’d point you for dinner.
Below are our personal favorites for the best restaurants in Napa Valley.
Planning a full Napa Valley trip? Don’t miss my guide to the best wineries in Napa Valley — reviewed the same way, by someone who’s actually been.
A16 Napa
A16 brings a Southern Italian soul to downtown Napa — and it fits right in. Inspired by the cuisine of Southern Italy and Campania, the menu is the kind that makes you want to order one of everything: wood-fired pizzas, housemade pastas, and a wine program that leans heavily into Southern Italian and natural producers. The burrata and Fritto Misto are both excellent ways to start, and the pastas are genuinely not to be missed. My personal favorite pizza is the Formaggi, though if you want something with a little more to it, the Vesuvio is a great call too.
One fun thing worth knowing if you’re a Napa regular or local: A16 has a members club called Circolo del Vino — a wine club with some nice perks for those who find themselves returning often (which, if you eat here, you will). They also have locations in San Francisco and Oakland if you want to continue the love affair beyond wine country.
Best for: A lively Italian dinner, pizza lovers, Southern Italian wine exploration
What to Order
- Burrata — a beautiful way to start; don’t skip it
- Fritto Misto — a classic, done well
- Pappardelle al Cinghiale — the pasta to order; rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying
- Formaggi pizza — my personal favorite on the pizza menu
- Vesuvio pizza — the move if you want something with a little meat
Angele Restaurant & Bar
There’s something about Angele that slows everything down in the best possible way. Tucked along the Napa River in a warm, wood-beamed space that feels like it could have been transplanted directly from Paris, it’s the kind of restaurant where you settle in and don’t want to leave. The menu leans into classic French technique, shifts beautifully with the seasons, and somehow manages to feel both timeless and entirely of the moment. The wine list is thoughtful without being overwhelming — a nice balance of local Napa producers and French imports — and the service strikes exactly the right note. For a romantic dinner in downtown Napa that never feels stiff or performatively fancy, Angele is always my first suggestion.
Best for: Romantic dinners, a classic French bistro experience, downtown Napa
What to Order
- Steak Frites — a go-to, always
- Seasonal risotto — ask what’s on and order it; never disappoints
- Any of the housemade pastas — the menu rotates, everything we’ve had has been excellent
- Bœuf Bourguignon — rich, slow, deeply satisfying; perfect when you want something a little more filling
Bear at Stanly Ranch
Bear is, without question, one of the most memorable restaurants Max and I have ever visited — anywhere, not just in Napa. Located at the stunning Stanly Ranch, Auberge Collection, just south of downtown, the space feels airy, modern, and refined, yet deeply connected to the surrounding landscape. Nothing about it is pretentious. The menu is seasonal and locally sourced in the truest sense — elevated California cuisine where every dish feels thoughtful and beautifully executed, like someone considered every single element on the plate and then made it look effortless.
We’ve been a handful of times, including the night Max proposed. That dinner is one I’ll never forget — but honestly, every visit has had its own kind of magic. Don’t skip dessert. The housemade ice cream is genuinely some of the best I’ve had anywhere. Make a reservation well in advance; this one fills up, and for good reason.
Best for: Special occasions, a truly extraordinary dinner, celebrating anything worth celebrating
What to Order
- Tiger prawns — a favorite starter; order them
- Kampachi — also excellent as a starter if you want something a little lighter
- Anything from the Vegetables menu — this kitchen does vegetables like most restaurants wish they could do protein; genuinely don’t skip this section
- Scallops — a personal favorite from the mains, though everything in that category is worth exploring
- Housemade ice cream — always, always order it for dessert; so good
If you’re staying at Stanly Ranch, Bear also has a tasty breakfast menu — be sure to enjoy!
Bistro Don Giovanni
A Napa institution — and one that absolutely earns that title. Bistro Don Giovanni has been serving Italian-inspired wine country food for over 30 years, and somehow it still feels vibrant and alive rather than coasting. The setting is lovely, with a terrace outside, a cozy interior, and a relaxed Italy-meets-California atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve truly arrived somewhere. The wood-fired pizzas are tasty, the house-made pastas are wonderful, and the wine list is, naturally, great. This is the kind of place that works for every occasion — anniversary dinner, long family lunch, a solo glass of wine at the bar with a bowl of pasta. Don Giovanni handles all types of meals.
Best for: Any occasion, reliable Italian done well, a long lunch or dinner
What to Order
- Fritto Misto — a classic, delicious starter; a great way to begin
- Mamma Concetta’s Meatballs — share these at the table; a crowd favorite every time
- Risotto of the day — always ask what’s on; it might be worth ordering whatever it is
- Spaghetti and Clams — my personal pasta go-to here
- Mandilli — beautiful, delicate pasta; a must if you’re in the mood for something more refined
- Gnocchetti — the move if you want something a little heartier
Bottega Napa Valley
Bottega is one of my absolute favorites in the valley — and not just because of the food, though that alone would be reason enough. This is where we celebrated our engagement with both of our families, and it could not have been a more perfect setting for it.
Chef Michael Chiarello’s love letter to Italian cuisine, set in the heart of Yountville, shows in every corner of the room. Rustic-luxe in the best way — warm lighting, stone walls, the faint smell of something slow-braised — it’s an atmosphere that does half the work before a single dish arrives. The menu celebrates seasonal, locally sourced ingredients through the lens of Italian tradition, and the pastas in particular are not to be missed.
Best for: Special occasions, celebrations, a beautiful Italian dinner in Yountville
What to Order
- Burrata — always an excellent choice at a great Italian restaurant, and especially here
- Arancini — order it; one of the best versions I’ve had
- Spaghetti alla Sophia Loren — my personal favorite on the menu; don’t leave without it
- Any of the handmade pastas — the menu rotates seasonally, and everything we’ve tried has been excellent
- Braised or slow-cooked meat dishes — this kitchen does them beautifully
Cole’s Chophouse
A classic steakhouse done exactly right. Cole’s Chophouse has been a downtown Napa anchor for good reason — set in a beautiful historic stone building on Colfax Street, the room feels timeless in the best possible sense. The kind of steakhouse that doesn’t need to reinvent itself because it gets the fundamentals so perfectly right. The mains are exactly what you’d hope for, but what really sets Cole’s apart is that the sides are just as good — the onion strings alone are worth the visit. The perfect combination of a great steakhouse and a great Napa night out.
Best for: A classic steakhouse dinner, celebrating with a great bottle of red, and date night
What to Order
- Any of the steaks — classic cuts, expertly prepared; this is the main event
- Onion strings — order them; don’t share them if you can help it
- The sides — genuinely as good as the mains; treat them accordingly
FARM Restaurant + Bar
Located within the gorgeous Carneros Resort and Spa, FARM is one of those restaurants where the setting and the food are equally worth the trip — and then the food turns out to be more than worth it on its own terms. Rooted in Italian farmhouse tradition and guided by a James Beard Award-winning chef, the menu sources ingredients from the resort’s own half-acre culinary garden and on-site chicken coop, and the result is food that feels both grounded and celebratory. The redesigned dining room with its barn-style doors and fireside patio is the kind of space where you want to arrive early, order a cocktail, and take your time.
A couple of things worth knowing before you go: Sunday brunch is a family-style experience — your table chooses four dishes to share at $68 per person, which is a wonderful way to try a lot of the menu at once. Dinner in the main dining room is a four-course format at $115 per person. If you’d prefer something more casual and à la carte, the Pavilion is a lovely option where the coursing structure doesn’t apply — and it’s where I tend to gravitate.
Best for: A special occasion dinner, Sunday brunch, a beautiful Carneros evening
What to Order
For brunch (family-style, choose 4 for the table):
- Apple Cinnamon French Toast — a standout from the brunch menu
- Maine Lobster Roll — yes, at brunch; yes, it’s as good as it sounds
- Housemade Beignets — a must
In the Pavilion (à la carte):
- Castelvetrano olives — a perfect snack to start
- Focaccia — order it alongside the olives while you settle in
- Agnolotti or Pappardelle — both beautiful; my go-to for a more substantial Pavilion meal
- Clam pasta — may be seasonal, but worth asking if it’s on the menu
Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch
Nestled in the heart of St. Helena on a historic working ranch, Farmstead is the kind of restaurant that makes you feel like you’ve been let in on something. The setting is beautiful — a lovingly restored barn on a property with genuine agricultural roots — and the food leans into that completely. Hearty, rustic, and genuinely delicious: wood-fired dishes, farm-fresh starters, and seasonal ingredients sourced directly from Long Meadow Ranch’s own sustainable operation. This is wine country cooking that tastes like the land around it. My suggestion: come for a long, unhurried lunch with a great bottle of Cabernet and nowhere to be afterward.
Best for: A long, relaxed lunch, wine country cooking at its most authentic, St. Helena afternoons
What to Order
- Farmstead Charcuterie Board — cured meats, pickles, a great starter to share at the table
- California Arborio Rice — honeynut squash purée, roasted mushrooms, crispy Brussels sprouts; a personal favorite from the lunch menu — add an egg on top
- Grass-Fed Beef Meatballs — tomato-bacon braised collard greens, Skyhill feta, creamy grits; so delicious
Gott’s Roadside
Not every meal in Napa needs to be a three-hour occasion, and Gott’s Roadside is the perfect reminder of that. A well-loved Napa Valley institution with locations in St. Helena and downtown Napa (and now Los Angeles, even), Gott’s serves genuinely great gourmet burgers, crispy fries, and hand-spun milkshakes in a retro roadside setting that makes the whole thing feel joyful. It’s casual, usually busy, and unabashedly fun. I always end up here at some point during a Napa trip — usually for a midday bite between wineries — and it never disappoints.
Also worth noting: in true Napa Valley fashion, yes, you can have wine with your burger. And you absolutely should.
Best for: A casual midday bite, families, a fun break between wineries
What to Order
- Gruyère & Caramelized Onion Burger — a favorite
- Double Cheeseburger — a classic for a reason
- Original Chicken Tenders — I am a chicken tenders girl over burgers seven times out of ten, and these are excellent
- Garlic Fries — definitely
- Fried Brussels Sprouts with lime & charred jalapeño mayo — yes, always
- Ahi Poke Crispy Tacos — a good call if you want something a little different
- Chocolate Shake — always, or the Peanut Butter & Chocolate if you’re feeling indulgent
RH Yountville Restaurant
RH Yountville is an experience as much as it is a restaurant, and I mean that entirely as a compliment. Set within the stunning RH compound in the heart of Yountville — a courtyard that feels like it belongs somewhere in Europe, surrounded by climbing greenery, antique mirrors, and candlelight that makes everything look like a painting — dining here feels quietly theatrical in the best way. The food is beautiful and seasonal, with locally sourced ingredients taking center stage. Weekend brunch is a particular treat — the setting in daylight, with the open-air courtyard bathed in California sun, is something I never get tired of. Even if you’ve been before, it doesn’t get old.
Best for: Weekend brunch, a beautiful dinner, anyone who wants to feel like they’re in a European garden for a few hours
What to Order
- RH Bellini — a lovely brunch cocktail and a nice break from a glass of wine
- Prosciutto Board — always; start here without question
- Lobster Salad — light, fresh, and genuinely delicious if you want something on the lighter side
- RH Burger — a staple for good reason; don’t skip it
- Truffle Fries — a must, especially alongside a glass of Sauvignon Blanc
- Lobster Roll — a repeat order for our group every time; speaks for itself
- Honey Glazed Salmon — a lovely dinner entrée, beautifully prepared
- Fusilli Pasta — another dinner favorite I keep coming back to; I have ordered it multiple times
Scala Osteria & Bar
Sister restaurant to valley favorite Bistro Don Giovanni, Scala Osteria brings a lively, coastal Southern Italian energy to downtown Napa’s First Street — and it’s become one of my favorite spots in the valley for exactly that reason. Think vibrant oyster bar, beautifully executed house-made pastas, Neapolitan-style pizzas, and whole fish preparations that feel pulled straight from a Naples trattoria. Walking in feels like being transported to the Amalfi Coast — which, in the middle of wine country, is a very welcome surprise. The cocktails are lovely too, and honestly, a nice break from an all-wine day. Don’t miss the Tiramisu Martini with dessert.
The story behind it is lovely, too: Scala was born from a genuine family partnership, with Giovanni Scala (of Don Giovanni) and long-time industry friends who met while working in Napa’s hospitality world. That warmth comes through in the room.
The atmosphere is buzzy and energetic — it can get lively on a weekend night, so if you prefer something quieter, ask for an upstairs table or an earlier seating.
Best for: A lively Italian dinner, seafood lovers, anyone craving the Amalfi Coast in wine country
What to Order:
- Ravioli al limone — delicate, bright, and exactly right
- Spaghetti con gamberi & vongole — shrimp and clams done the way the coast intended
- Mandilli al vero pesto Genovese — silky pasta, beautiful pesto; a must
- Pizza fritta con cicoli “al forno” — a fried pizza that earns its place on the table
- Vongole al forno — baked clams; start here if you love seafood
- Pan-seared branzino — fish done beautifully
- Zeppole — the Italian donuts for dessert; non-negotiable
- Tiramisu Martini — order it alongside dessert; you won’t regret it
We’re always discovering new spots in the valley, and this list will keep growing as we do. A few restaurants still on my Napa Valley list that I’m looking forward to trying:
- Charter Oak — St. Helena, on my list for our next visit
- Clementine — adorable spot in Yountville!
- The French Laundry — a bucket list meal
- Ad Hoc — Thomas Keller’s more casual Yountville spot
