Where to Stay in Rome: The Best Boutique Hotels for a Design-Forward Italian Escape
Last Updated on February 25, 2026 by Lauren Belzer Sanford
Rome is one of those cities that feels both ancient and modern, all at the same time — where cobblestone streets, golden-hour rooftop aperitivi, and late-night trattorias exist in effortless conversation with contemporary design and boutique hospitality. When it came to finding the best boutique hotels in Rome for our Italian honeymoon (my second time in the Eternal City), I wanted something warm and creative, with real personality and a location that kept us close to the heart of things. We chose Casa Monti Roma, and it completely delivered on that modern-meets-artful Roman energy I was looking for.
Even though Rome is filled with beautiful hotels in every style and price point, this roundup focuses specifically on boutique, design-driven stays in the 4–5 star range — the kinds of places that feel special, curated, and personal, without tipping into ultra-luxury territory (that’s another blog post!). Some of these we seriously considered for our honeymoon, and others are ones I’ve saved for future trips.
If you’re planning a Roman holiday — whether it’s your first trip or your fifth — these boutique hotels are worth bookmarking. And if you’re more drawn to the feel of a private apartment, I also have a full guide to the best Airbnbs in Rome worth exploring.
Casa Monti Roma
Casa Monti is the first Italian property from a small, family-owned hotel collection you might already know: owners of La Fantaisie in Paris and Cœur de Megève in the French Alps (both of which I have been following on Instagram for a bit). The moment I learned this, it skyrocketed to the top of our honeymoon list — and for good reason. The hotel blends the Monti neighborhood’s creative, bohemian energy with color, thoughtful details, and the kind of cozy-luxe atmosphere boutique hotels do best (in my opinion).
We stayed for only two nights, but were able to indulge in a few of their on-site amenities: their restaurant, rooftop bar, and lobby bar. While we didn’t have time for any treatments, we took a peek inside their incredible Susanne Kauffman spa! I was obsessed with the overall design of every space in Casa Monti, and it was within walking distance (appx. 15 minutes) of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Perfectly located!
Oh, and my favorite part was the turn-down service gifts. We were given a Casa Monti-branded sleep mask, and you can bet that came home with me. I now use it on every long(er) flight!
Why it belongs on your list: Art-forward interiors, an intimate neighborhood feel, and beautifully designed rooms that feel more like a stylish Roman apartment than a traditional hotel stay.
Residenza B
Residenza B is one of those places that feels instantly calming. Tucked within the elegant streets of Campo Marzio, this boutique property leans into sculptural lines, warm lighting, and minimalist design in a way that still feels cozy and inviting. It’s modern Rome at its best — refined without being sterile, stylish without trying too hard. The rooms are beautifully designed, too: soft textures, curated decor, and those small, intentional touches that make boutique hotels so memorable.
Its location is another standout. You’re within walking distance of Via del Corso, Piazza del Popolo, and endless shops and cafés — the perfect base for long days exploring and slow evenings wandering the surrounding streets.
Why it belongs on your list: A sophisticated, design-led stay in an elegant, walkable neighborhood for travelers who want a beautiful hotel combined with comfort and walkability.
Palazzo Talìa
Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this hotel is quite literally something special. Palazzo Talìa is what happens when a contemporary boutique hotel meets Roman history — and the result is stunning. Housed in a restored palazzo in Monti (one of Rome’s most artsy, cool neighborhoods), the hotel blends original architectural details with modern finishes, warm woods, luxe fabrics, and curated art. It is intimate, polished, and luxurious.
Even though it’s a newer property, it already feels like one of the most thoughtfully designed boutique stays in Rome. Suites are spacious and beautifully layered, and many of the public spaces still carry hints of the building’s historic charm. It’s the kind of place that feels exclusive but not intimidating — ideal for honeymooners, couples, or anyone wanting something elevated yet still personal.
Why it belongs on your list: Boutique luxury with history and modern flair — a perfect mix of restored architecture and elevated contemporary design.
G-Rough
If Casa Monti is romantic-bohemian, G-Rough is its edgy, art-school sister — bold, moody, and wildly creative. Set inside a 17th-century townhouse just steps from Piazza Navona (one of my favorite piazzas in Rome), this boutique hotel is known for its vintage Italian furniture and intentionally rough-around-the-edges aesthetic. It’s maximalist in mood but minimalistic, too — I don’t know how to make that make sense, but if you see photos or choose to stay here, you’ll understand.
Each suite feels like its own artistic space — high ceilings, unique layouts, statement pieces — and the whole property leans into that “perfectly imperfect” look that design lovers adore. Plus, the location is unbeatable for wandering Rome’s most iconic streets, slipping into wine bars, and getting delightfully lost.
Why it belongs on your list: A creative, unforgettable boutique stay that feels like stepping into an artist’s Roman loft. It is also a part of the Design Hotels™ collection for those who are looking for a Roman stay within the Marriott Bonvoy™ family.
Chapter Roma
Chapter Roma brings a fresh, urban energy to Rome’s boutique hotel scene. Think industrial details, bold artwork, and a slightly “rebellious design style make it feel totally different from the classic Roman aesthetic — in a wonderful way. It’s a favorite among design lovers, younger travelers, and anyone who appreciates a hotel with personality.
The rooms are sleek and minimal but still comfortable, and the hotel’s social spaces (including a trendy bar and lobby lounge) give it that buzzing, “in-the-know” feeling. Plus, it’s located in the Regola district, which is full of small boutiques, bars, and cafés — a great home base for those who want something a little bit less touristy but still central.
Why it belongs on your list: A stylish, modernized boutique stay with edge, character, and an energetic atmosphere.
Choosing a hotel in Rome can feel overwhelming — the options are endless — but boutique stays have a way of making the experience. They make the city feel smaller, more personal, and somehow even more charming. The properties on this list each bring something different to the table, whether it’s bold design, understated elegance, or the feeling of staying in a stylish Roman apartment. Whichever direction you choose, you truly can’t go wrong. Rome has a way of making every stay memorable!
