The Best Boutique Hotels Around the World (And Why They Belong on Your Bucket List)
Last Updated on February 22, 2026 by Lauren Belzer Sanford
I may be biased, but after years of traveling, I truly believe I’ve stayed at some of the best boutique hotels around the world. While not all of them are famous names you’d instantly recognize, that’s part of the charm. Many are small, family-run hotels or unique finds tucked into unforgettable destinations, each with its own story and style.
While I wish I could include all of the boutique hotels I’ve ever stayed at, I’ve reserved this post to serve as an ever-evolving guide highlighting only my all-time favorite boutique hotels, hotels that I’ve personally stayed at — from hidden gems to design-forward stays — and exactly why they deserve a place on your travel bucket list.
What is a Boutique Hotel?
While the criteria can be broad, I see a boutique hotel as typically a smaller property (definitely under 75 rooms) that prioritizes distinctive design, personalized service, and a sense of place. Instead of cookie-cutter layouts and standardized amenities, boutique hotels lean into character and creativity—think thoughtful interiors, locally inspired touches, and an experience that feels more “one-of-a-kind.”
And yes, a hotel can still be considered “boutique” even if it’s part of a larger group or collection of properties, as long as it maintains that individuality and charm!
Europe
Europe is where my love for boutique hotels really comes alive. Between centuries-old buildings turned into stylish retreats and countryside stays that feel like a secret escape, these are the European boutique hotels that stand out most from my travels.
AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado – Lisbon, Portugal
When I visited Lisbon with my parents and younger sister in the fall of 2023, we stayed at AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado, a boutique hotel with just 28 rooms and suites. The location couldn’t have been more central — we were able to explore a large majority of the city on foot (though, if you know Lisbon, you know there were plenty of hills involved!). From the hotel, we could easily reach the famous Time Out Market Lisboa, Praça do Comércio, Arco Triunfal da Rua Augusta, Jardim Roque Gameiro, and so much more.

The rooms themselves were full of character. My parents stayed in a spacious Triple Room with its own cozy fireplace and sitting area, while my sister and I shared a smaller Mini Deluxe Room — simple but perfect for what we needed. What really made it special was being right on Praça do Município, directly in front of Lisbon’s City Hall. In the evenings, saxophonists and other street musicians would fill the square with music, creating the most magical ambiance to return to each night.
What sets AlmaLusa apart is how deeply it leans into Portuguese culture — from the design details to the local brands used throughout the property, to the delicious Portuguese tea they always had at the ready in the lobby. It feels like more than just a hotel stay; it’s an authentic introduction to the city itself!
Masseria Grieco – Ostuni, Italy
Set in the heart of the Valle d’Itria (Itria Valley), Masseria Grieco is one of the most stunning boutique properties in all of Puglia — and for me, one of the most meaningful. This masseria (a traditional Apulian farmhouse turned boutique hotel) is where we celebrated our destination wedding in Puglia, making it forever one of the most special places in the world to me.

The masseria itself is the perfect blend of old-world charm and modern comfort. Think centuries-old stone architecture, a lovely courtyard in front of a stunning stone chapel, and traditional trulli-style roofs. The grounds are expansive, the pool is a true showstopper, and the staff could not be sweeter or more accommodating.
While our time here was tied to our wedding, I’d love to return as a hotel guest — to experience the property differently, enjoy its restaurant for dinner, and soak in the ambiance alongside fellow travelers. There’s something incredibly special about knowing we can come back year after year to a place that already holds so many special memories.
Masseria Le Torri – Polignano a Mare, Italy
Some hotels come and go from memory, but others etch themselves into your heart forever. For me, Masseria Le Torri is one of those rare places. It’s not only one of the best boutique hotels I’ve ever stayed at — it’s firmly in my top five stays of all time.
Tucked into the countryside near Polignano a Mare, this whitewashed masseria became our home base in the few days leading up to our destination wedding. From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us like family — kind, attentive, and genuinely invested in making every moment special. The property itself feels like stepping into a dream, with its bright white walls, serene courtyards, and a sense of magic that’s hard to put into words.

I’ve shared a full write-up of our stay at Masseria Le Torri, but it’s worth repeating here: this is the kind of boutique hotel that sets the bar impossibly high. No matter how many places I explore next, it will always remain one of my most magical stays.
Masseria Santo Scalone – Ostuni, Italy
For a peaceful escape just outside Ostuni, Masseria Santo Scalone is a boutique property that feels both timeless and restorative. We stayed here in the days after our wedding to kick off our Italian honeymoon adventure — a few nights dedicated to slowing down and savoring Puglia at a gentler pace. With serene patios, quiet courtyards, and a gorgeous infinity pool, it was the perfect mix of rustic charm and boutique comfort.

I wrote a full recap of our stay at Masseria Santo Scalone, but what stood out most was the atmosphere: warm hospitality, beautiful grounds, and the sense that time had slowed down just for us.
Stella d’Italia – Florence, Italy
During our honeymoon, we based ourselves at Stella d’Italia, housed within a 16th-century palazzo, which offers an epic immersion into Florentine beauty and culture. This historic residence sits right on Via Tornabuoni — Florence’s most prestigious street, lined with luxury boutiques and noble palaces — yet also neighbors charmingly authentic side streets where daily life unfolds.

For peak season in Italy, they were what I’d consider affordable rooms; incredibly spacious and thoughtfully designed. They even gave us the pink room that I specially requested via email before our stay! Each of the 24 bedrooms in the palazzo is unique, with varying views. Ours had high ceilings, elegant details, and plenty of natural light — a perfect retreat after busy days of exploring.
A simple breakfast was included (a lovely way to start the day), though we still couldn’t resist sneaking out for a local espresso and pastry. And while the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and other iconic sites (wine windows included) were just a short walk away, returning to Stella d’Italia each evening pre-aperitivo and post-dinner felt like stepping into a peaceful, stylish sanctuary.
United States
The U.S. may not always be the first place people think of for boutique hotels, but there are definitely some gems that prove you don’t need to fly across the world for a boutique-worthy experience. Stanly Ranch in Napa Valley is my first U.S. entry on this list — and honestly, it earned its spot immediately. As I continue to travel and discover new favorites stateside, I’ll keep adding them!
Stanly Ranch, Auberge Collection – Napa, California
A quick note: at 135 rooms, Stanly Ranch technically exceeds what most people picture when they think “boutique.” But as part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, it embodies everything I value in a boutique stay — distinctive design, a strong sense of place, and an experience that feels deeply personal rather than corporate. Every Auberge property is its own world, and Stanly Ranch is no exception.

We spent one night here when Max proposed, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most beautiful properties I’ve ever set foot on. Spread across 712 acres of Napa Valley vineyard land, the resort feels expansive and unhurried — like it was designed to slow you down. The cottages are stunning, the grounds are endlessly photogenic, and the whole property carries that golden-hour glow that makes Napa feel like nowhere else on earth, even in the winter.
It’s a splurge, no question. But for a special occasion — an engagement, an anniversary, a milestone birthday — it’s the kind of stay that earns its price tag completely.
Why it belongs on your list: Napa Valley’s most stunning resort stay, with vineyard views, world-class dining (Bear is one of my favorite restaurants in all of the valley), and the kind of atmosphere that makes you never want to leave.
