San Juan Capistrano is a Southern California oasis tucked between the coastal towns of Dana Point and Laguna Beach. Known for its historic mission, storybook Los Rios District, and relaxed ranch-meets-beach-town vibes, it’s the kind of place that doesn’t feel “stuffy.”
While the town may be famous for the swallows that return each year, let’s be real—the San Juan Capistrano food scene is what really keeps people like me coming back. From the trendy River Street Marketplace to cozy trattorias tucked along the streets, this charming town is a treasure when it comes to dining.
If you’re looking for the best restaurants in San Juan Capistrano, here are a few spots you can’t miss.
La Vaquera – River Street Marketplace
Nestled in the heart of River Street Marketplace, La Vaquera offers a farm-to-table, wood-fired dining experience that celebrates California’s ranching heritage. The big kicker is an impressive 11-foot oak-wood grill, around which the entire restaurant was designed.
Whether you’re there for brunch, lunch, or dinner, the ambiance and flavors are sure to impress. Don’t miss their handcrafted cocktails made from artisan spirits and a curated selection of local and imported wines, some of which come from Mexico, South America, or even Spain.
We’ve been for both dinner inside and brunch on the patio—the menus share some overlap, but each has its own unique highlights.

What to Order at La Vaquera
- Surf and Turf – 5 oz beef filet, prawns, garnet yams, nopales sofrito (tip: order with Vaquera Butter!)
- Roasted Heirloom Beets – whipped farm cheese, citrus, salsa seca, pink peppercorn honey
- Cornbread – queso oaxaca, roasted poblano pepper
- Chilaquiles – tortilla chips, salsa roja, sunny side up farm eggs, chipotle-santa maria pinquito beans, pickled red onions, queso fresco, lime crema
- Vaquera Burger – fresh ground beef, Monterey Jack cheese, charred poblano pepper, pickled red onion
- Tuna Tartare – ahi tuna, cucumber, paprika oil, radish, pickled Fresno chilies, tortilla chips
Ciao Pasta Trattoria
For a taste of Italy in San Juan Capistrano, head to Ciao Pasta Trattoria. We went here for one of our wedding countdown dinners, and it was the perfect choice. The chef-owner is originally from Puglia in Southern Italy and brings the flavors of his hometown to Orange County, alongside regional Italian classics.
What to Order at Ciao Pasta
- Calamari Fritti – fried calamari + pomodoro sauce
- Trofie al Pesto – homemade short, twisted pasta + basil pesto + stracciatella cheese
- Brasato di Manzo – slow-cooked short ribs + San Marzano tomato sauce + red wine reduction + homemade orecchiette pasta (a special recipe from the chef’s mother in Puglia)
Finca
If you’re craving something wood-fired, seasonal, and unique, Finca is the perfect place to go. Owned by Chef David Pratt, it is an homage to the early days of California and the vibrant flavors of Mexico. The wood-fired kitchen crafts everything from house-aged burgers to incredible seasonal dishes — many ingredients sourced just down the road at The Ecology Center. The menu is divided into “Farmer” and “Rancher” sections, marrying the best of both worlds: fresh, vegetable-forward dishes and incredible proteins.
The space itself is lovely, with warm terracotta tones, an open-air feel that allows you to see right into the wood-fired kitchen, and a gorgeous mirrored bar that pours an impressive list of mezcal- and tequila-based cocktails, and wines from Mexico. Beyond the taste of the food, Finca stands out for its commitment to regenerative farming.

What to Order at Finca
- Grilled Corn – First of Season Corn, Early Girl Polenta, Sofrito, Cotija Anejo Queso, Crema, Cilantro
- Harris Ranch Beef Tallow Fries – Kennebec Potatoes, Trio of Sauces
- Three Stars – 8oz Beef Patty, Farmer’s Market Mushrooms, Valley Ford Farm Highway 1 Cheese, Porcini Aioli, Onion Demi, Fig Jam, Brioche-Milk Bun (this burger is so, so good)
- Vaquero – 8oz Beef Patty, Chorizo Queso Fundido, Lettuce, Avocado, Spiced Potato Bun
