The Best Restaurants in San Juan Capistrano: Where OC’s Ranch History Meets Really Good Food
Last Updated on March 27, 2026 by Lauren Belzer Sanford
San Juan Capistrano doesn’t always get the dining attention it deserves. Tucked between Dana Point and Laguna Beach along the southern stretch of Orange County, it’s the kind of town that rewards a slower visit — the kind where you wander the Los Rios Historic District in the morning, stop into Hidden House Coffee for a latte near the train tracks, and then linger over a long lunch somewhere with good wine. The best restaurants in San Juan Capistrano, California, are a genuine reason to make the drive down — here are the ones worth your time.
La Vaquera
Nestled in the heart of River Street Marketplace, La Vaquera is one of those restaurants that earns its reputation from the moment you walk in. The centerpiece is an impressive 11-foot oak-wood grill, around which the entire restaurant was built — and around which everything on the menu is designed. It’s a farm-to-table, wood-fired experience that celebrates California’s ranching heritage in the best possible way: thoughtfully sourced, beautifully executed, and never trying too hard.
Whether you’re there for brunch, lunch, or dinner, the quality carries across the board. The handcrafted cocktails lean into artisan spirits and a curated wine selection with bottles from Mexico, South America, and Spain — a fun and unexpected touch for an Orange County restaurant. If you’re coming with a group, book ahead. This one fills up.

What to Order at La Vaquera
- Surf and Turf – 5 oz beef filet, prawns, garnet yams, nopales sofrito (tip: order with Vaquera Butter!)
- Roasted Heirloom Beets – whipped farm cheese, citrus, salsa seca, pink peppercorn honey
- Cornbread – queso Oaxaca, roasted poblano pepper
- Chilaquiles – tortilla chips, salsa roja, sunny side up farm eggs, chipotle-santa maria pinquito beans, pickled red onions, queso fresco, lime crema
- Vaquera Burger – fresh ground beef, Monterey Jack cheese, charred poblano pepper, pickled red onion
- Tuna Tartare – ahi tuna, cucumber, paprika oil, radish, pickled Fresno chilies, tortilla chips
Ciao Pasta Trattoria
For a taste of Southern Italy in San Juan Capistrano, Ciao Pasta Trattoria is the one. We actually discovered it during one of our wedding countdown dinners in the lead-up to our destination wedding in Puglia — and the fact that the chef-owner is originally from Puglia himself made the whole evening feel like a very good omen. He brings the flavors of his hometown to Orange County alongside regional Italian classics, and the result is the kind of pasta that makes you feel like you’re eating somewhere in Puglia’s Valle d’Itria.
A few dishes worth ordering: the Trofie al Pesto with homemade short pasta, basil pesto, and stracciatella; the Calamari Fritti with pomodoro; and if it’s on the menu, the Brasato di Manzo — slow-cooked short ribs over homemade orecchiette made from a recipe passed down from the chef’s mother in Puglia. It’s a special spot, and one of my favorites in all of Orange County.
What to Order at Ciao Pasta
- Calamari Fritti – fried calamari + pomodoro sauce
- Trofie al Pesto – homemade short, twisted pasta + basil pesto + stracciatella cheese
- Brasato di Manzo – slow-cooked short ribs + San Marzano tomato sauce + red wine reduction + homemade orecchiette pasta (a special recipe from the chef’s mother in Puglia)
Finca
If you’re craving something wood-fired, seasonal, and genuinely creative, Finca is the move. Chef David Pratt’s restaurant is an homage to the early days of California and the vibrant flavors of Mexico — a combination that sounds unusual and tastes extraordinary. The wood-fired kitchen turns out everything from house-aged burgers to inventive seasonal dishes, with many ingredients sourced just down the road at The Ecology Center.
The menu changes with what’s available, which means every visit feels slightly different — and every visit is worth it. It’s the kind of place that feels rooted in somewhere specific, in the best possible way.

What to Order at Finca
- Grilled Corn – First of Season Corn, Early Girl Polenta, Sofrito, Cotija Anejo Queso, Crema, Cilantro
- Harris Ranch Beef Tallow Fries – Kennebec Potatoes, Trio of Sauces
- Three Stars – 8oz Beef Patty, Farmer’s Market Mushrooms, Valley Ford Farm Highway 1 Cheese, Porcini Aioli, Onion Demi, Fig Jam, Brioche-Milk Bun (this burger is so, so good)
- Vaquero – 8oz Beef Patty, Chorizo Queso Fundido, Lettuce, Avocado, Spiced Potato Bun
If you’re a local (and even if you’re not), be sure to follow Finca on Instagram to learn about their seasonal and temporary menu items! I recently went back for lunch to try their porchetta sandwich, tri tip sandwich, and the spritz on the cocktail menu — all were delicious!

The historic Mission San Juan Capistrano is worth a visit before or after lunch — it’s one of the most beautifully preserved Spanish colonial missions in California, and the surrounding Los Rios Historic District makes for a lovely pre-dinner wander.
