Along the picturesque coastline of Southern California, Orange County offers a ton of things to do and natural beauty to see. Whether you’re a resident on the search for new adventures or a visitor exploring this sunny region for the first time, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in Orange County.
As someone who attended four years of college in the city of Orange and has lived in South OC since 2022, I’ve had the opportunity to experience much of what Orange County has to offer. From pristine beaches to world-class entertainment, here’s your comprehensive guide to unlocking the treasures of Orange County.
Visit Orange County’s Beaches
If there’s one thing Orange County does best, it’s beach days. From world-class surf breaks in Huntington to tucked-away coves in Laguna, every stretch of coastline along Pacific Coast Highway has its own speed. In my personal opinion, Laguna Beach has the best beaches and coves in all of OC (which is why you’ll see a lot on this list).

Whether you’re catching a wave, packing a picnic, spending all day sunbathing, or just chasing golden-hour light, these are some of my favorite beaches to spend the day:
- Aliso Beach (Laguna Beach): Aliso Beach is one of the easiest beaches to access in Laguna, with parking right next to the sand. Wide shoreline, steady waves, and lifeguards make it great for families and body surfing. Hate packing food to bring to the beach with you? Grab a bite at The Lost Pier Café without having to leave the beach!
- Corona del Mar State Beach (Newport Beach): Unbelievably scenic, CdM State Beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and spending time in the sun. There’s a protected cove, gentle waves, and plenty of space to set up for the day.
- Crescent Bay Beach (Laguna Beach): A stunning cove framed by rocky cliffs and palm trees, ideal for swimming, boogie boarding, and spending time on the beach. The water here is crystal clear, and at low tide, you can explore tidepools along the northern rocks. Great views from the bluff-top park above, too!
- Moro Beach (Laguna Beach): The most accessible part of Crystal Cove State Park (technically a Laguna Beach address, though mostly associated with Newport Coast and Newport Beach), this stretch of coastline is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, with parking, restrooms, and easy beach access. Ideal for a laid-back beach day or beach picnic after hiking the nearby bluff trails.
- Newport Municipal Beach (Newport Beach): The classic Newport spot for a true SoCal beach day. Wide stretches of sand, volleyball courts, and the iconic pier make it perfect for sunbathing or a casual surf session.
- Salt Creek Beach (Dana Point): A South OC favorite known for its consistent surf and scenic bluffs overlooking the Pacific. Perfect for surfers, picnics, or a relaxed beach day with ocean-view lawns above the sand. There’s a small café near the parking lot and a paved path leading straight to the beach.
- Shaw’s Cove (Laguna Beach): A local favorite and one of Laguna’s best-kept secrets. Sheltered by rocky cliffs, it’s perfect for snorkeling, paddleboarding, and calm swims. Limited parking nearby, so arrive early — it’s small but stunning. I actually suggested this spot for our friends’ Laguna Beach proposal because of how stunning it is!
- Thousand Steps Beach (Laguna Beach): Don’t let the name scare you — it’s closer to 200 steps, and absolutely worth it. Expansive sand, bright blue water, and a hidden sea cave at the south end make it one of Laguna’s most scenic spots. Best visited at low tide for exploring!
- Treasure Island Beach (Laguna Beach): A stunning, postcard-perfect cove located below the Montage Laguna Beach. Calm waves, tidepools, and crystal-clear water make it ideal for swimming. Stay for sunset, it’s one of Laguna’s best.
- Victoria Beach (Laguna Beach): Famous for its fairytale-like Pirate Tower, this beach feels tucked away and secluded from the world. Best to go at low tide so you can walk along the rocks and explore the tide pools!
Local Tip: If you’re visiting in summer, beach parking can fill up quickly — especially in Laguna and Newport. Arrive early or opt for a weekday visit for easier parking and lighter crowds.
Browse Local Boutiques & Shop at Outdoor Malls
Orange County takes shopping seriously — but in true SoCal fashion, it does it with sunshine, palm trees, and open-air design. Whether you’re after beach boutiques, luxury fashion, or a relaxed afternoon strolling through an outdoor mall with a latte in hand, there’s no shortage of places to shop (and people-watch) in OC.

- Fashion Island (Newport Beach): Overlooking the ocean, Fashion Island is Orange County’s version of coastal luxury. The open-air layout feels like a resort, with fountains, lush landscaping, and ocean breezes flowing through as you browse stores like Vince, Rails, and Jenni Kayne. It’s also a surprisingly great place for a laid-back afternoon — stop by Neiman Marcus Café or R+D Kitchen for lunch, then catch the sunset over Newport Harbor. Locals know to visit during the holidays, when Fashion Island’s massive Christmas tree transforms the courtyard into a festive space.
- Irvine Spectrum Center (Irvine): In the heart of Orange County, the Irvine Spectrum Center is a prime destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment. This outdoor mall has a variety of things to experience, from palm-lined walkways, colorful storefronts, and an iconic Ferris wheel towering over the Center. Visitors can explore an array of upscale boutiques, well-known national retail stores, and specialty shops offering a wide range of products, from fashion and accessories to home decor and tech.
- Lido Marina Village (Newport Beach): Tucked just off the harbor, Lido Marina Village blends coastal luxury with a small-town feel. This walkable spot is one of my personal favorites — think boutiques, pretty storefronts, and harbor views everywhere you look. Shop at LoveShackFancy, Jenni Kayne Home, or Sugar Paper (the cutest stationery and gifts), then grab a coffee at Herst Coffee Roasters or a cocktail at Malibu Farm (a must).
- Pacific City (Huntington Beach): If you’re craving ocean views with your shopping, Pacific City in Huntington Beach is the perfect mix of coastal cool and California charm. Just steps from the Huntington Beach Pier, this open-air lifestyle hub blends surf culture with elevated style — the kind of place where you can browse boutiques in your sandals, grab a smoothie, and still catch the sunset without moving your car.
- South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa): If you’re in the mood to splurge, South Coast Plaza is the destination for OC luxury and designer shopping. It’s one of the largest luxury malls in the country, home to brands like Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, but it still manages to feel polished rather than overwhelming.
Beyond the big multi-shop destinations, OC’s towns are full of icons and hidden gems alike, all worth wandering into. Here are some of my personal favorites:
- Melrose in the OC – San Clemente
- Nuance Home + Lifestyle Boutique – Laguna Beach
- Our Spare Change – San Clemente
- Roger’s Gardens – Newport Beach
- The Shop – Laguna Beach
- Tuvalu – Laguna Beach
Boating, Surfing & Water Adventures in Orange County
The best way to experience Orange County’s coastal lifestyle is to actually get out on the water. Whether you’re cruising through Newport Harbor, paddling around Dana Point, or learning to surf in Huntington, these ocean-based adventures capture everything that makes the OC coastline so special. From relaxed to active, there’s a little something for every kind of day by the water.
- Duffy Boat Rentals: A Newport Beach classic activity — these electric boats are easy to drive (no license needed!) and perfect for brunch on the water or sunset cruises with snacks and drinks in tow. Bring a speaker, float through Newport Harbor, and soak up the golden hour views! Duffies are also rentable out of Dana Point, too! My personal favorite company to rent from is EB Rental LTD. in Lido Marina Village.
- Kayaking & Paddleboarding: Calm harbors make Dana Point and Newport Beach perfect for exploring by paddleboard or kayak. Rentals are easy to find near the docks, and you’ll often spot sea lions lounging on the buoys!
- Sailing Excursions: For something a little more elevated, charter a private yacht or sailing tour from Newport Beach or Dana Point. Many companies offer charcuterie boards, wine, and sunset sails along the coast (and if they don’t, they often allow you to bring your own) — the perfect mix of luxury and laid-back. We did this with my (now) in-laws for Max’s 21st birthday, and it ended up being one of those perfect California afternoons — calm seas, warm light, and dolphins cruising alongside the boat!
- Surf Lessons: Not a must, but if you’re going to take a surf lesson anywhere, make it Huntington Beach. It’s Surf City USA for a reason — the waves are consistent, the instructors are great, and the energy around the pier is as classic SoCal as it gets. More experienced surfers can head south to Salt Creek (Dana Point) or T-Street (San Clemente) for bigger breaks.
- Whale Watching: Orange County is one of the best places in California to spot dolphins and whales year-round. Head out from Dana Point Harbor (the “Whale Watching Capital of the World”) or book a tour from Newport Landing for a few hours on the Pacific — morning cruises often mean calmer trips!
Take a Coastal Hike or Nature Walk
OC’s coastline isn’t just for days on the water or posted up at the beach. It’s also home to incredible hiking trails, walking paths, and nature preserves with ocean views, blooming wildflowers, and hidden canyons.
My favorite spots:
- Crystal Cove State Park (Laguna Beach): Miles of trails with panoramic views, beach access, and rolling hills.
- Irvine Regional Park (Orange): OC’s oldest park and a local favorite. Think wide walking trails, picnic areas, and even a small lake for paddle boating. You’ll also find the charming Orange County Zoo tucked inside the park.
- Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (Laguna Beach): Quiet trails, shady canyons, and a real “hidden California” feel.
- Peters Canyon (Orange): Inland but scenic, with trails for hiking or jogging surrounded by native California landscape.
- Top of the World (Laguna Beach): One of the best views in all of Orange County — bring water and prepare for a climb!
Spend the Day in an Iconic OC Town
Each Orange County town has its own personality — from laid-back surf culture to artsy coastal charm and historic squares filled with character. Part of the magic of OC is that every few miles feels like a new world.
- Dana Point: Relaxed and rugged — think ocean cliffs, whale watching, and a small-town vibe.
- Irvine: Known for its green spaces, bike paths, and community events, Irvine surprises visitors with hidden gems like Tanaka Farms (pick your own produce!) and seasonal pop-ups at the Great Park.
- Laguna Beach: Artsy, coastal, and effortlessly beautiful. Spend your day gallery hopping, boutique shopping, and cove-hopping.
- Newport Beach: Luxe, lively, and full of harbor energy. Rent a Duffy, grab a cocktail at Lido Marina Village, or take the ferry to Balboa Island.
- Old Towne Orange: Vintage charm meets foodie heaven. Antique shops, cafés, and a historic circle that feels like stepping back in time (I spent my college years here)!
- San Clemente: A charming Spanish-style surf town with great restaurants, walkable streets, and a pier perfect for sunset.
Indulge in the Local Food Scene
Orange County’s dining scene is, to put it simply, impressive. From ocean-view brunches to hidden taquerias and fine dining destinations, you’ll find a little bit of everything here — and it’s all served with a side of that signature SoCal sunshine, of course!

Wine Tasting in Orange County
While Orange County isn’t exactly known for its vineyards, you might be surprised by just how many great places there are to sip (and swirl your glass) locally. From coastal tasting rooms to hidden gems tucked inland, there’s no shortage of spots to enjoy a glass (or a flight) without having to jet off to wine country.
- Lido Tasting Room by Bravante Vineyards (Newport Beach): A stylish, coastal-chic spot perfect for an afternoon glass by the harbor. Their wine list is exclusively Bravante Vineyards, and the atmosphere fits right in with Lido Marina Village’s relaxed but refined energy. It brings the essence of Napa Valley to the heart of Newport Beach!
- Rancho Capistrano Winery (San Juan Capistrano & Ladera Ranch): A longtime local favorite with two OC locations. Their house wines are made from California grapes, and the San Juan Cap location pairs perfectly with lunch before or after exploring the city (or the Mission).
- Giracci Vineyards & Farms (Silverado Canyon): One of the few actual vineyards in OC, nestled in the foothills for a true wine country feel. It’s a bit of a drive, but worth it for the rustic setting, weekend tastings, and laid-back atmosphere.
- Hi-Time Wine Cellars (Costa Mesa): Not a winery, but a local institution for discovering (and tasting) new bottles. Their tasting bar hosts regular events for wine lovers!
- Fable & Spirit (Newport Beach): Technically a restaurant, but worth a mention for their award-winning wine list and creative pairings that make every meal feel like a tasting experience. Check out my guide to the best restaurants in Newport Beach for my breakdown of this coastal gem.
- McClain Cellars (Laguna Beach): A fun, artsy tasting lounge pouring wines from their Santa Ynez-based vineyards. The space has an upbeat, modern vibe with bright artwork and local flair.

Whether you’re sipping at a vineyard in Silverado Canyon or tasting coastal wines steps from the beach, Orange County proves you don’t have to go far for a good pour. But, if you are looking for a more “true” wine country experience in Southern California, the Temecula Valley is only about an hour and a half drive away from the OC.
Visit Local Attractions & Cultural Hubs
Beyond its beaches and boutiques, Orange County has a rich heritage that many may not be fully aware of. The county is rich in history, art, and much more. You’ll find Spanish missions, seaside art galleries, live performances, and family-friendly spots that make perfect additions (or alternatives) to your typical beach itinerary.

- Balboa Fun Zone (Newport Beach): A nostalgic slice of old-school California — ferris wheel rides, frozen bananas, and harbor views galore.
- Disneyland Resort (Anaheim): Perhaps one of the main reasons people even come to Orange County. The Happiest Place on Earth — and a California icon for a reason — it’s a must-do at least once while you’re in OC. Enjoy the rides and attractions, grab a churro, stay for the fireworks, and plan your visit with my full Disneyland guide.
- Laguna Art Museum (Laguna Beach): Overlooking the Pacific, this small but significant museum celebrates California artists and coastal culture.
- Mission San Juan Capistrano (San Juan Capistrano): One of California’s most historic landmarks and a peaceful place to wander, especially in spring when the gardens are in full bloom. Tickets can be bought online through the Mission San Juan Capistrano website.
- Pacific Marine Mammal Center (Laguna Beach): A family-friendly stop where you can learn about rescued sea lions and seals (free to visit, donations encouraged).
- River Street Ranch (San Juan Capistrano): Right next door to the Los Rios District, this family-friendly ranch (formerly Zoomars) is adored by local families. Think pony rides, a petting zoo, and tiny tractor rides for little ones. It’s the perfect stop if you’re exploring San Juan Cap for the day!
- Segerstrom Center for the Arts (Costa Mesa): The hub for Broadway shows, concerts, and performances in Orange County.
- Tanaka Farms (Irvine): A working family farm and local favorite known for its seasonal U-pick experiences: from strawberries in spring to pumpkins in fall and sunflowers in summer. It’s one of those perfect family-friendly OC spots where you can enjoy a bit of farm life, support local farmers, and soak up a little sunshine!
From sun-kissed beaches to world-renowned attractions, Orange County entices visitors with its diverse set of experiences and attractions. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventures or simple relaxation, this special stretch of Southern California offers something for everyone. Pack your bags and see what Orange County has to offer!
